Our Captains & Mates

Captain Greg Buckner (Owner, Miss Susie Charters)

Captain Greg Buckner was born and raised in St. Mary’s County, MD, and has enjoyed fishing local waters most of his life. Greg has over 20 years of experience in charter boat fishing and averages over 300 trips per year.

After Greg’s freshman year at St. Mary’s Ryken High School, he started his first job in the fishing business at the local tackle shop, The Tackle Box where he learned about all types and fishing methods. After graduating from high school he attended St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he continued to work at the Tackle Box, fish the local waters, and began his first position as a first mate on a local charter boat, working for Captain Greg Madjeski aboard the Temple M. Captain Greg has been in the Chesapeake Bay charter fishing business ever since!

After his season aboard the Temple M and various other charter boats out of the Ridge, MD area Greg started to look for a local captain who needed a full-time first mate. Finally, Greg met Capt. John Montgomery aboard the Miss Susie out of Solomons, MD. He worked with Capt. John for the next two seasons as a full-time first mate and he continued his education at St. Mary’s College. After these two seasons Capt. John persuaded Greg to obtain his U.S. Coast Guard Captain’s license so he could run Miss Susie when Captain John needed days off. Greg received his U.S. Coast Guard 50-ton master’s license one month after receiving his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from St. Mary’s College! For his third and fourth seasons aboard the Miss Susie, Greg worked as a full-time mate for Capt. John and whenever he needed a day off, Greg captained the boat, an arrangement that worked very well because he knew the boat and his clientele.

Just days before the 2004 Striped Bass trophy season, Captain John had big news… He was moving to Syracuse, NY, selling Miss Susie and his charter business. He wanted to know if Greg would like to buy the boat and business. Of course, he did!

On June 1, 2004, Greg became the proud owner of Miss Susie Charters. During the fall of 2007, Greg expanded the business and purchased fine Finder Charters from Capt. Sonney Forrest. The Fin Finder is a beautiful 46ft Markley which allows Greg to fish the Virginia Beach Winter Striper season and also offers two very nice boats for our customers fishing out of Solomons. In 2022, Greg took the original Miss Susie out of service and converted the Fin Finder into Miss Susie II. In a partnership with Captain Lee Tippett, a 46 ft x 16 ft Carmen Charter boat (Fin Finder II) was brought into the fleet to carry the Fin Finder Charter customers.

Captain Greg would like to thank the following talented captains whose guidance has helped him get to where he is today: Capt. Greg Madjeski, Capt. Stan Harris, Capt. Charlie Nicholson, Capt. Gary Sacks, Capt. Jim Smith, Capt. Hank Conley, Capt. Sonny Forest, Capt. Wally Williams, Capt. Charlie Marenka, Capt. Danny Pritchett, Capt. Ronnie Scott, Capt. Tom Ireland, Capt. Lee Peters, and Capt. Jim Ekas.

A very special thank you to Captain John Montgomery who taught Greg so much more than just how to catch fish, like how to treat customers and how to run a top-notch charter fishing operation. Thanks for everything!

First Mate Chris Paul

Chris Paul has been working as a first mate for Miss Susie Charters since the fall of 2022. The key element that Chris brings to the table is he wants to be there, as in he loves being the first mate on Miss Susie II. When someone loves their job as much as Chris loves being the first mate on the busiest Charter Fishing Boat on the entire Chesapeake Bay they are going to very quickly get good at all things involved in Charter Fishing. He always has a big smile on his face and never shies away from answering any questions! Before working with Miss Susie Charters, Chris worked for Capt. Bucky Hobbs as first mate on weekends, framed houses, and as a glass man. Chris has incredible work ethic, an incredible passion for fishing, and an incredible appreciation for being able to earn a living taking people fishing.

First Mate Steve Armsworthy (Weekends/Fill-In)

Steve Armsworthy and Captain Greg Buckner went to school and played lacrosse together at St. Mary’s Ryken High School. Steve was an excellent goalie and ended up with a full ride to Stonybrook University after 2 years of playing Junior College lacrosse at Catonsville. Steve started in the charter fishing business as a first mate the same summer that Capt. Greg started as a mate, and from day 1 of owning Miss Susie Charters., Steve has been there as a first mate in some capacity. Over the past several years, Steve has worked for his dad and uncle’s business, A&M Glass during the week and is the first mate aboard Miss Susie II every weekend. Steve is all personality, he will make you laugh and often at his own expense. He can talk to anyone about anything, and still gives it all he has to make sure everyone on board has an excellent time. He has lots of stories to tell and they are all true.

Captain Steve Scrivener

Steve was born and raised in Calvert County, MD. His father first introduced him to the Chesapeake Bay at age 5 and he has enjoyed the Bay and her bounty ever since. At the age of 17, Steve started working for Capt. Chris Lopinski aboard the Aggie Rose. Steve continued working for Capt. Chris as a first mate and as a boat-builder for 12 years. He earned his USCG captains license in 2001, won a bunch ofmoney in Rockfish Tournaments along the way, and most recently for about 9 years Steve has been the full-time first mate aboard Never E Nuff with Capt. Shaun Pruitt. Steve Scrivener has more time on the water over the past 25 years than most bay captains will ever have and his experience in a wide variety of situations makes him special. Steve has a great personality and knows how to make sure everyone on board has a good time and catches fish.

First Mate Kyle Mills

This guy is special (most successful high school wrestlers are). Kyle started working as First Mate aboard Miss Susie III in 2021 and before that he worked aboard Loosen Up with Capt. Frank Carver and aboard Never E Nuff with Capt. Shaun Pruitt. Crazy work ethic and crazy drive, Kyle has it and he always has customers laughing and makes sure they are always having a great time. Capt. Steve Scrivener and First Mate Kyle Mills are an amazing team! They consistently put their clients on fish even when conditions and the bite are not ideal, solid dudes who will treat you right!

Captain Nick Lane

Capt. Nick Lane was born and raised in Great Mills, MD. He’s hunted and Fished for as long as he can remember. This guy has more confidence and ability than 95% of captains twice his age and that comes from operating all types of vessels in all types of situations. Capt. Nick is very personable, upbeat, and entertaining. He wants his customers to catch fish and always gives it his all. Nick has worked as a First Mate and fill-in Captain all up and down the Chesapeake Bay and even out in the Atlantic Ocean.

First Mate Hunter Gillespie

Hunter Gillespie was born and raised in Middle River, MD, and has been working as a first mate on board Lucky Lady II since the age of 14. In 2023 he worked aboard Miss Grace and we are very fortunate to have him on the back of Miss Susie IV in 2024. Hunter loves to hunt and fish and is very passionate about it and everything he does he wants to be the best. Capt. Nick Lane and Hunter are the perfect team.  Yhey are high energy and high effort and they will make sure your crew has a great trip every time.
