The 2006 fishing season as a whole has been excellent, but the fishing that we are experiencing right now is truely unbelivable. On Friday the 22nd we caught our limit of Rockfish (19″ to 25″) and carefully released a dozen non-deep hooked keeper sized fish in about 20 minutes time. They were all caught on light tackle spinning rods using live Spot for bait. After catching our Rockfish we headed out to catch some Bluefish and with in an hour and one half we caught 60 Blues from 4 to 10 lbs. Then we went bottom fishing to replinish the bait that we used and try for a few of the Jumbo Spot. The bait sized Spot bit good and we also caught about one dozen of the Jumbo Spot. Simply an awesome day on the Bay. Saturday and Sunday the Rockfishing was just as good but the extreme winds did not allow us to put much time in for the Bluefish. On Saturday we caught around 10 Blues and on Sunday we caught around 20 Blues from 3 to 7 lbs. With better weather on Monday we quickly caught our Rockfish again and then caught 40 Blues from 3 to 7 lbs before the fishing party said they had enough Blues. On Tuesday we did just a half day afternoon trip and first caught our bait Spot and then quickly caught our Rockfish and then headed for home, making a quick stop just outside the mouth of the Patuxent River and trolled up 12 Blues from 2 to 4 lbs.
I don’t know for sure how long this great fishing will continue, but it sure is fun. I do expect the live lining for the Rockfish to continue through probably the 3rd week of October. As for the Bluefish, it is hard to tell, but I think it is safe to say that we will have them for at least two more weeks.

If you want to go fishing this fall, now is the time. It does not get any better than this. The live lining for Rockfish (20″ to 28″) is as good as it gets. And the fish are not just biting in one special “spot”, the bite is excellent in several places.
In addition to the Rockfish, we found the “motherload” of big Bluefish (4 to 9lbs) today. We landed fifty of these hard fighters in just one hour. These fish should also continue to bite for another two weeks or so.

The last two weeks have been very interesting on the Chesapeake Bay. Tropical Storm Ernesto apperred to have really hurt fishing on the day after the storm. But fishing has improved dramatically since the storm. With the exception of the day after the storm, we have been very easily catching our limits of nice Rockfish from 19″ to 26″ with a few 30″ plus fish. Live Spot are still doing the trick. After catching our limit of Rockfish on Tues the 12th we gave Flounder fishing a try and caught over 30, but only had two over the 15″ min. After about an hour of Flounder fishing, our drift slowed to about nothing so we decided to go looking for breaking fish. And we found the “motherload”. We first started trolling through the schools, catching about 8 Spanish Mackeral and 20 Bluefish. And after a few passes, our fishing party decided they wanted to use the light tackle to catch these fish. So we broke out the light spinning tackle and for two hours they caught fish after fish. With the jigging spoons, most of the fish were Rockfish (12″ to 26″) which we carefully released, and the rest were Bluefish from 2 to 4 lbs. On Thursday the 14th after quickly catching a nice limit of Rockfish, our party wanted to give Flounder fishing a good few hour effort. We caught at least 40 Flounder, with 5 being over the 15″ min.
It looks like the great live lining action is going to continue for a few more weeks, there seem to be pleanty of Rockfish to catch and they are biting in several locations. The breaking fish are out there and we should have Mackeral and Bluefish to catch jigging and trolling for the next few weeks.
